Ottertail gym blends garage feel with fitness

OTTERTAIL — Preservation and pumping iron usually don’t go hand in hand, but for Kristi and Joe Hammers, finding a way to save an iconic building and providing an opportunity that was unavailable in the town before intersected. On Thursday, Otter Fitness Garage, located at 1o6 W. Main St. in Ottertail, opened its doors to the community with the idea of allowing 24-hour access to fitness in a familiar building.

“We’ve considered opening a 24-hour gym a few years ago, trying to scope out a good location within the small surrounding communities and Weibe Garage seemed like the perfect place,” Kristi said. “We wanted to save this iconic building, help revitalize downtown Ottertail, and provide a place where our members feel at home.

We live in the Ottertail area and love it, so we feel it’s the best place to start a new adventure.”

The facility will have 24-hour access to cardio machines, strength equipment and free weights with the use of a fob to scan access to the gym. But this doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to talk with a manager or staff member as Otter Fitness Garage will have regular staffed hours: Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. If these

times don’t work for you, the gym is also available by appointment.

This will not only be a place to access weights and fitness equipment, but it will offer a variety of classes.

A few of the initial offerings will be yoga with Wendy Billy on Thursday’s at 8:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m., pilates with Doreen Nelson Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m., and an aerobic weight-lifting class. All classes will be starting in February.

“We would love to add more classes as we get the business going and are currently looking for more fitness instructors and personal trainers,” Kristi said.

Membership to the gym has plenty of options including single, couple and family. Otter Fitness Garage offers several lengths for each of the options including monthly, six months or a year.

If you are looking to get back into the swing of things but don’t want to commit quite yet, the facility also offers a 10-visit pass. Discounts are available to seniors 65-plus, students, veterans and law enforcement.

Although gym attendees will focus on workouts, routines and the equipment they will need to use, the facility also offers different amenities to members. Free WiFi, Xbox and coffee are just a couple of things, while they will also have TVs with wireless audio, a fitness incentive program and private showers.

The business also plans to sell a variety of clothing items.

Currently, the gym is doing short orientations and membership sign-up.

After a successful first day Thursday, the staff will be on hand today from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon for additional showings and signup. “People are welcome to just take a look around to see what we have to offer,” Kristi said.
