Area gyms, fitness centers offer promotions, discounts for New Year's resolution seekers

Area gyms and fitness centers are providing promotions and discounts to attract new members seeking to meet fitness goals for the new year. Silver City Barbell owner Carlos Cayboria said he has seen a rise in membership for the season. The 290 Pratt St. location provides members with a variety of free weights, cardio machines and training equipment.

“As soon as you walk through those gym doors, you’re an athlete,” Cayboria said. “Doesn’t matter if all you do is walking on a treadmill.” Cayboria said new members will have the opportunity to bypass an initiation fee and pay £15.95 monthly. He said there is a military discount and existing members can access personal training for 20 percent off regular price for the month.

Amy Bartas, a Meriden native, was at the gym Thursday during her lunch break. “You can use any of the equipment that you want, there are no restrictions,” Bartas said. The Factory Athletics and Wellness, located at 1657 Meriden Waterbury Tpke. in Southington, is a fitness and training center that provides group cycling, a variety of equipment and is home to CrossFit Factory Square.

Owner Roseanne Vargo said the gym is offering a free program to introduce new members to CrossFit. Hurst Strength, located at 168 N. Plains Industrial Road in Wallingford, will offer a free one week trial and consultation, which includes a discussion about meal planning.

New members at the Edge Fitness Clubs can join for £1 for the first month, and Planet Fitness is also offering a deal where new members can join for a £1 initiation fee and £10 a month.

Both gyms have locations on South Broad Street in Meriden.
